CIT Coordinator Certification

The CIT Coordinator

Successful CIT programs have individuals who are at the heart of the programs, facilitating the relationships and managing the day-to-day aspects of the programs. These individuals—dedicated mental health professionals, law enforcement officers or advocates—are CIT coordinators.

A coordinator’s most important role is to build trust and improve communication among CIT partners, including members of the steering committee, as well as CIT officers, front-line service providers, families, people in crisis, elected leaders and the public.  While coordinators do not need to do everything, they need to know all the partners, including their strengths and weaknesses.

The Course

CIT International provides the opportunity for those serving as CIT coordinators to learn about the important role the coordinator fills and become certified as a CIT coordinator.  This 8-hour course of instruction, that is delivered virtually in 4-hour sessions conducted on consecutive days, covers the tasks and topics of the various coordinators' roles and how to work with each other to develop or reform their community's crisis response system.

Based on CIT International's publication,"Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Programs: A Best Practice Guide for Transforming Community Responses to Mental Health Crises" this course is for all CIT coordinators, regardless if you are currently serving in this capacity or plan to in the future.

The Certification

By attending this course and successfully passing the required testing, you will be recognized and certified as a CIT coordinator for three years.  In addition to receiving the certification, you will receive membership into CIT International, for as long as your certification remains valid.  Additionally, you will have access to online resources only available to currently certified CIT coordinators. Those becoming certified for the first time will receive a hard copy of  "Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Programs: A Best Practice Guide for Transforming Community Responses to Mental Health Crises". ($40 value)

Recertification must be completed by attending continuing education sponsored by CIT International during the third year of the coordinator's certification, which at this time is identified as attending a virtual Coordinator Certification Course as a refresher at a reduced price.
